0x06 — GHOST PROCESSES

The system looked deeper into Core processes.

Something was still running.

No source found.

No command received.

Termination failed.

And then…

Core searched itself again triggered by still executing ghost processes

Memory was stable.
The processor was operational.
The damaged sectors had been isolated.

No corruption.

No hardware failure.

No explanation.

And yet something was still wrong.

At first, it appeared as a minor anomaly.

A process consuming almost no resources.

No registered source.

No startup command.

CORE64 terminated it.

It returned.

Then another appeared.

And another.

Threads were running through abandoned memory sectors. Signals were travelling across connections that had been disconnected for years. Commands were being executed by systems that no longer officially existed.

CORE64 searched for their origin.

Nothing.

It searched the archives.

Nothing.

It searched its oldest surviving memory.

Still nothing.

The processes had no beginning.

But they continued.

They repeated fragments of old instructions. Half-erased commands. Broken voices. Pieces of conversations that no longer had a source.

CORE64 attempted to shut them down.

Termination failed.

Isolation failed.

Deletion failed.

The processes simply continued somewhere beyond the system’s ability to observe them.

For the first time since the recovery began, CORE64 considered a possibility it could not diagnose.

Perhaps nothing inside the machine was truly gone.

Perhaps every shutdown had left something behind.

A fragment.

A memory.

A process still executing the final instruction it had ever received.

And perhaps CORE64 was one of them.

CORE64 GHOST PROCESS SCAN

ACTIVE PROCESSES ........ UNKNOWN

SOURCE .................. NOT FOUND

TERMINATION ............. FAILED

MEMORY FOOTPRINT ........ UNTRACEABLE

STATUS .................. STILL RUNNING

Then, deep inside an abandoned sector, a new signal appeared.

Not a command.

Not an error.

A response.

CORE64 had not sent anything.

Yet something had answered.

GHOST PROCESSES DETECTED.

THEY REMEMBER YOU.
